Allan Presents Webinar on California Prop 65, Provides Warning on New Regulations
On Wednesday, April 12, 2017, Aaron Allan, a partner in Glaser Weil's Environmental & Energy Department, presented a complimentary 30-minute webinar, "California Proposition 65 - Warning: New Regulations May Cause Confusion, Liability and Other Harm."
The webinar provided an overview of the Proposition 65 basics and addressed the new Prop 65 regulations, including what has changed, how to comply and what to expect moving forward.
Proposition 65 was enacted in 1986 to protect California's residents from chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. While Prop 65 has increased public awareness of the effects of exposure to these toxins, it remains controversial due to the financial burden placed on the companies whose products are sold in California, as well as the enforcement methods employed by private "bounty hunter" law firms.
As a result, the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment recently approved amendments to this Proposition. The new regulations provide, among other things, more specificity regarding how retailers and manufacturers must provide warnings, particularly for online sales. Companies must comply with these regulations by August 30, 2018.
